Dwayne Allen injury: Colts TE out for season with hip surgery

Indianapolis got some bad news on Wednesday when it was revealed that their starting tight end would miss the rest of the year.

Andy Lyons

Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, a surprising breakout of the 2012 rookie class, will undergo hip surgery and miss the rest of the season according to Adam Schefter. Allen, 23, injured his hip in the third quarter of Indianapolis's Week 1 win against the Raiders and was held out in Week 2 against the Dolphins.

Allen will finish the season with one catch for 20 yards and a touchdown.

The Colts selected Allen in the third round of the 2012 draft out of Clemson. While much hype surrounded teammate and fellow rookie tight end Coby Fleener, a teammate of quarterback Andrew Luck at Stanford, Allen took advantage of extra playing time last season when Fleener was injured. He finished the season with 45 catches for 521 yards and three touchdowns as one of Luck's favorite targets.

As of yesterday, Allen was considered to be day-to-day, but on Wednesday the news broke that the injury was much more serious than that. Now this year it will have to be Fleener that steps up.
