Brandon Weeden may not be Browns starting QB when he returns

Cleveland might not be ready to give Weeden the keys to the car once again when he’s healthy.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Cleveland Browns announced on Wednesday that Brian Hoyer would be the starting quarterback this Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, with Brandon Weeden nursing a sprained thumb. But Weeden doesn't have a lock on the job once he is healthy enough to play.

Head coach Rob Chudzinski said Weeden may not get his starting gig back when he returns to full strength, according to the team’s official site:

“I’m going to leave all of the options open. It’s a matter of where he’s at from a health standpoint -- all of that plays into it -- where we’re at and how guys are playing, as well.”

Weeden has struggled throughout his career, and has not shown much to make Browns fans believe he is the answer going forward. In the season opener this season against the Miami Dolphins, Weeden was terrible, tossing three interceptions while completing only 26 of 53 passes.

Last week, the Oklahoma State University product was much better against the Baltimore Ravens, going 21-for-33 for 227 yards without a touchdown or interception.

Should Hoyer get injured this week versus Minnesota, veteran Jason Campbell is the next man in line. Campbell is a former first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins.
