Robert Griffin III says he needs to run more to improve Redskins’ offense

Griffin believes the running game must improve if Washington wants to get back in win column.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III says the team has to have him run the ball more to help the offense, according to ESPN.com's John Keim.

Griffin has been throwing the ball a ton -- completing 56-of-89 passes -- in the first two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, both times ending up with a loss. In fairness, he has been forced to throw often with the deficits the team has been facing early in games. Still, Griffin wants a more balanced attack going forward, per the piece:

“The plays are in, they’re ready to run, and I’m ready to run them,” Griffin said. “We just haven’t had a chance to do them because we’ve fallen behind too much.

“It’s not that I want to run more, I just feel like that’s what we need and if that’s what it takes for us to win games, I’m willing to do that. It’s not anything I’m going to shy away from.”

In the two losses this year, Griffin has only taken off nine times, none of those attempts being designed. Ultimately, the change in offensive identity has spelled disaster in the nation’s capital.

Head coach Mike Shanahan and his son, Kyle, the offensive coordinator, have tried to throttle back all of the read-option plays to protect Griffin, who tore his ACL in January last season. Now, Griffin wants more opportunities to cause chaos for the defense with his legs.
