Donovan McNabb questions new Eagles offense

Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb wonders if Philadelphia’s fast-paced offense will last very long.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Former Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb will have his jersey number retired by the team during halftime of Philadelphia's Thursday Night Football matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the former star of the Eagles' offense is being honored by the team, he is not holding back about his opinion of Chip Kelly's play-calling.

When asked about the read-option heavy offense that Kelly likes to run, McNabb called the formation’s success “just a fad” in an interview with CSN Philly’s Reuben Frank. “I don’t know if any offensive player would want to run 90 plays in a game,” said McNabb, who played for the Eagles for 11 seasons. “If you’re running 90 plays in a game, that means your defense is pretty awful and you’re running entirely too many plays.”

McNabb, who played in the West Coast offense under Andy Reid, believes the new speed-based play-calling is actually a detriment to the Eagles’ success:

“I tip my hat off to what they’ve been doing the first two weeks, but there comes a time if you’re up by 14, up by 21, maybe with about 11, 10 minutes to go, it’s time to go into a mode where you’re trying eat up some clock,” McNabb said. “You can’t continue to run that fast-paced offense because it continues to run down not only their defense, but it wears your offense down, too.”

The Syracuse alum played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Eagles, Redskins and Vikings. He will be the ninth player in Eagles history to have his number retired.

The Eagles will host the Chiefs during Thursday Night Football on NFL Network at 8:25 p.m. ET.
