Brandon Weeden injury: Browns QB could be back in Week 4, per report

Brandon Weeden may be ready to play with his injured thumb by Week 4.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

The Browns may be missing quarterback Brandon Weeden in Week 3 against the Vikings, but the former first-round pick may be ready to play soon. Doctors, who examined Weeden's sprained thumb on his throwing hand, discovered that the quarterback's injury is not bad enough that it requires surgery, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Browns have already declared veteran Brian Hoyer as the starter for Sunday's road trip to Minnesota, but Weeden could possibly be ready for Week 4, according to Schefter. However, head coach Rob Chudzinski is on record as saying that Weeden isn't guaranteed his starting spot when he returns.

Weeden injured his thumb during the Browns' Week 2 loss against the Ravens. He was replaced in the fourth quarter of the game by backup Jason Campbell. The announcement of Hoyer starting on Sunday means that he has supplemented Campbell on the depth chart.

The return of Weeden to the starting lineup could be based on the play of Hoyer on Sunday. The Oklahoma State alum was having a lackluster start to the season with a passer rating of 62.0 to go along with just one touchdown and three interceptions. Hoyer has started just one game in his career.
