Andre Johnson injury: Texans WR likely to play after practicing Thursday

After suffering a concussion in Week 2, Houston’s star wide receiver is on track to play in Baltimore.

Bob Levey

Andre Johnson was a full participant in practice on Thursday, making it likely that he will play in Houston's Week 3 game against the Ravens, according to Drew Dougherty of HoustonTexans.com. On Sunday, Johnson banged his head on the turf after coming down with his eighth reception of the day. Johnson was led off the field by trainers and diagnosed with a concussion. The wide receiver never returned, sitting out the remainder of Houston's 30-24 overtime win over Tennessee.

The Texans followed the concussion protocols mandated by legislation the NFL put in place before the 2011 season, meaning Johnson would need to be symptom-free before suiting up for practice. If Johnson were to sit, the Texans would be faced with the possibility of starting Keshawn Martin opposite rookie DeAndre Hopkins. Martin is in his second year and has just 12 career receptions, making Johnson's recovery especially providential for Houston.

Johnson has been one of the most consistently outstanding receivers in football, notching over 1,200 yards receiving in four of the last five seasons. The former Miami Hurricane has made the Pro Bowl six times and has led the NFL in receiving yards twice.
