Quintin Mikell injury: Panthers S ruled out for Week 3

The Panthers will be without veteran Quintin Mikell on Sunday.

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers will have two new starters at safety in Week 3. Veteran safety Quintin Mikell has been ruled out against the Giants, according to Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. The former Ram suffered an ankle injury in Week 2.

Mikell will miss the game along with Charles Godfrey, who was placed on injured reserve this week by the Panthers after suffering a torn Achillies tendon in Week 2 against the Bills. Rookie safety Robert Lester and free agent pickup Mike Mitchell will start in the veterans' spots on Sunday, according to Jones.

The Panthers signed Mikell shortly before the start of the season and made him the starter opposite Godfrey over Mitchell, who competed for the job during the summer. Lester is an undrafted free agent from Alabama, who was waived during final cuts by Carolina and placed on the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster earlier this week.

The Panthers will host the Giants on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
