C.J. Spiller returns to Buffalo Bills after personal leave

Spiller is back with the Bills following a personal tragedy.

Buffalo Bills running back C.J. Spiller has rejoined the team after dealing with a loss in his personal life, according to the Bills official website. The Bills' leading rusher in 2012 left the team earlier in the preseason to deal with the death of his grandfather, who is accused of shooting and killing two of his former co-workers before killing himself.

Spiller was away from the team for nearly a week, but he's back in Buffalo and preparing to play against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

“I wanted to be around my guys,” he said. “I wanted to come and practice with these guys and get ready for New England. I understand that it is a tragic event that took place. It’s going to take a while to cope with it. But at the same time, I can’t forget the task and the goal and the dreams that we have here as a team and as an organization. I want to be a part of that.”

The former Clemson star says it’s going to take some time to get through the recent trauma, however.

“Obviously, I’m lying if I said I’ll put it behind me. It’s still early. There’s still some emotions there. When I get out there on the football field that’s all I’m worried about. When I go home and stuff like that, you should be able to cope with it. I’m pretty sure if I need any guidance or counseling, I’ll get that.”

Spiller was a breakout star for Buffalo last season, racking up 1,244 rushing yards and six touchdowns to go with 43 catches for 459 yards.
