Packers cut B.J. Coleman, sign Seneca Wallace as backup quarterback

Journeyman quarterback Seneca Wallace eschews retirement for a chance to back-up Aaron Rodgers.

Matt Sullivan

The Green Bay Packers have signed backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. The news comes after the release of B.J. Coleman just a few hours before the addition of Wallace.

The Packers backup quarterback competition was an interesting side note throughout the preseason after the team added Vince Young to the mix. Young fared well and received solid remarks from team officials, but Coleman won out and the team released Young while paring down rosters to the final 53-man total.

The team apparently wasn’t quite pleased with any of their in-house options, however, considering Coleman was cut Monday morning.

Wallace played for the San Francisco 49ers this preseason, but was cut after saying he didn't want to play in the fourth preseason game last week. Wallace was then going to retire, but clearly the Packers' offer made him change his mind.

The journeyman quarterback has been in the league since 2005, playing five seasons with the Seattle Seahawks before spending two years on the Cleveland Browns.
