Victor Cruz expected to play Giants opener

Cruz suffered a bruised heel two weeks ago, but looks to be ready for the Giants’ regular season opener.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was wearing a boot last week, but is fully expected to be ready for the team's regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, according to Conor Orr of the Star-Ledger. In his first day back at practice, Orr said that Cruz looked as if he wasn't injured at all.

Victor Cruz was running a route during individuals, planted hard on the left heel and cut inside. For a guy that was in a walking boot a week ago -- even if it was just precautionary -- you couldn’t tell he was injured at all.

Cruz, 26, suffered a bruised heel in a preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 18 and hadn't returned to the field since. One of several injuries sustained by the Giants in preseason, the return of the Pro Bowl receiver will be a welcomed one for a passing offense that will have to function without Martellus Bennett, Domenik Hixon and Ahmad Bradshaw, three of the team's top five pass-catchers in 2012 by receptions.

An undrafted free agent in 2010, Cruz became a full-time starter for the first time in 2012 and finished with 86 receptions, 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Giants are scheduled to kick off the 2013 season with a Sunday Night Football road game at AT&T Stadium against the Cowboys.
