The Carolina Panthers signed veteran safety Quintin Mikell to a one-year deal on Monday, the team announced. To make room for Mikell on the roster, the Panthers placed safety Haruki Nakamura on the injured reserve list after he suffered a concussion in Thursday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mikell, 32, is entering his 11th season in the NFL and went through training camp and preseason without a team after he was released by the St. Louis Rams in March. Prior to joining the Rams in 2011, Mikell spent the first eight years of his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles after joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2003.
In 155 career games, Mikell has recorded 12 interceptions, 16 forced fumbles and 53 passes defended. He earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2009.
According to Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer, Mikell will compete with Mike Mitchell for the starting strong safety role with the team.
