NFL news roundup: Aldon Smith DUI, Russell Okung to IR and more

Aldon Smith was arrested for a DUI, Russell Okung was put on injured reserve and more you may have missed from Friday.

Brian Bahr

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro outside linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested for driving under the influence after a single-vehicle accident on Friday. Smith hit a tree and his car caused skid marks all over someone's driveway. He allegedly blew a .15 on the breathalyzer and was found with both marijuana and pills in the car. 49ers had coach Jim Harbaugh said that Smith would play in Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts. That is, of course, provided the league doesn't suspend him before that point.

Here’s what else you might have missed on Friday:

Okung to IR

Seattle Seahawks left tackle Russell Okung was put on injured reserve on Friday. He was placed there with the return designation, meaning he will be eligible to return after eight weeks eight weeks from the day he was placed there. He's dealing with a torn ligament in his toe and will need 6-8 weeks to rest, so the timing works out fine.

Holmgren blasts Richardson trade

The Cleveland Browns recently traded running back Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Former Browns president Mike Holmgren deemed the trade a "knee-jerk reaction." He also said that, if he were head coach, he'd take it up with the owner. Many have panned the move as the Browns giving up on this season.

Haley calls out Pittsburgh offense

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley called out his players on Friday. Haley said the running game was letting the team down, and that they need more than the 3 yards per carry they're averaging at this point. Of course, the team is without rookie Le'Veon Bell, who is dealing with an injury. Bell was going to be the starter before going down with the injury. Haley and the Steelers are off to an 0-2 start to the season.

Injury reports abound

Yesterday was Friday, meaning official injury reports for most teams around the league were made available. You can find the full list we covered if you search through the link above, but some notables include: Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert, Indianapolis Colts safety LaRon Landry, Atlanta Falcons left tackle Sam Baker and Cleveland Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden. They are all among those already ruled out for Sunday's games.
