Rob Ninkovich contract: Patriots DE reaches extension through 2016, per report

Rob Ninkovich will be in New England until at least 2016.

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

The Patriots have made a move to lock up one of their key defenders. New England has signed Rob Ninkovich to a contract extension that will keep him in a Patriot uniform until at least 2016, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Ninkovich signed with the Patriots in 2009 after two stints with the Saints and one with the Dolphins. He was a fifth-round pick of the Saints in 2006 out of Purdue.

Since joining the Patriots, Ninkovich has started 44 games for New England at linebacker and defensive end. Per Rapoport, Ninkovich will receive three more years on his deal, worth $15 million. Of that sum, $8.5 million will be guaranteed money.

The veteran has been a key pass rusher for the New England defense and posted 14.5 sacks between 2011-2012. He also six forced fumbles over the last three seasons.

The Patriots currently have a 2-0 record and will face the Buccaneers in Week 3.
