Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Dan Williams is not with the team Sunday, excused from playing against the Saints after learning his father, Thomas Williams, was killed in a car accident.
Cardinals NT Dan Williams inactive after father dies on way to game
The Arizona defensive lineman received the worst kind of news Saturday, learning that his father passed away on the way to seeing him play on Sunday.
Williams’ father was driving from Memphis to New Orleans so he could see his son play this weekend. The accident occurred near Jackson, Miss., killing Williams’ father while injuring his mother and sister.
Williams’ mother and sister are expected to recover from their injuries.
Dan Williams is in his fourth year with Arizona after being a first-round pick out of Tennessee in 2010. He was unexpectedly listed as “questionable” on Saturday night for family reasons, and the team announced Sunday the reason behind his absence.

Williams enjoyed perhaps one of the greatest football moments of his life two weeks ago, returning an interception for a touchdown against the Rams in Week 1. The Cardinals travel to Tampa Bay to play the Buccaneers next week, and Williams’ status going forward is not yet known.
