Lions vs. Redskins 2013: Detroit holds on to late-game lead by containing Washington’s offense

Our SB Nation writers are reacting to the Lions’ 27-20 win over the Redskins in Week 3.

The Lions were able to notch another tally in the win column following Detroit's 27-20 win over the hosting Washington Redskins. While Detroit was without starting running back Reggie Bush, the Lions moved the ball quite easily on the Redskins' league-worst run defense. The Redskins were able to stay in the game with Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris aiding in the Washington mid-game comeback. In the end, the Lions buckled down on defense and kept RGIII from making a big play. Matt Stafford threw for 385 yards and three touchdowns, while Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson combined for 231 receiving yards and a touchdown. The Lions are now 2-1, while the Redskins have fallen to 0-3 on the season.

UkRedskin of Hogs Haven believes the Lions were able to hold onto the win when they figured out how to contain RG3 in the third quarter:

The Redskins received a punt to start the third quarter. After a promising start to the drive, Kyle Shanahan called for a play-action bootleg. Detroit’s defensive ends had struggled to contain Griffin all game on bootlegs, but this time the defender kept his edge. With no receivers open, Griffin was forced to cut back inside and ran up the middle, picking up 21 yards. As he went down to avoid the hit, he fumbled the ball. Griffin was obviously giving himself up, but because he dove forward head-first instead of sliding, it was ruled a fumble and a crucial turnover.

Sean Yuille of Pride of Detroit is happy to have the Lions’ long-time losing streak to Washington over with:

Finally, the streak is over. After dropping 21 straight road games against the Washington Redskins, and after never winning a game against them in the D.C. area, the Detroit Lions emerged victorious on Sunday by a score of 27-20. The Lions were in control for much of the game, and unlike last week, they were able to put things away late with a big touchdown and a stop at the end. As a result, the Lions are now 2-1 and in position to potentially move into first place in the NFC North.

The Lions will host the Bears in Week 4, while the Redskins will travel to Oakland to take on the Raiders.
