Falcons vs. Dolphins 2013: Miami spoils Atlanta’s road trip

Our SB Nation writers are talking about the Dolphins’ comeback win over the Falcons in Week 3.

The Dolphins and Falcons met in Week 3 for a close battle that featured balanced attacks on Sunday. Miami was able to score in a touchdown late into fourth quarter, leaving Atlanta only 38 seconds to launch a comeback. Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill finished 24-of-35 for 236 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as he led the Dolphins on five different scoring drives to steal the win from the Falcons. Atlanta wide receiver Julio Jones' 115 receiving yards and Matt Ryan's two passing touchdowns were not enough to seal the deal on the road as the Dolphins won the game by the score of 27-23. The Dolphins are now 3-0, while the Falcons have fallen to 1-2.

Kevin Nogle of The Phinsider notes the overall offense effort that Miami used to comeback against the Falcons:

And, then the team turned it around. The Dolphins would score twice in the third quarter, a 50-yard field goal from Sturgis followed by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Brian Hartline. The fourth quarter saw the Falcons retake the lead from the 20-20 tie, adding a field goal to lead by three.

Then the magic of Ryan Tannehill's development kicked in. With 4:46 left in the game, the Dolphins got the ball back, down three, after a missed field goal by Atlanta. Tannehill hit Lamar Miller on a two yard pass on 1st and 10 from the 25 yard line. then a seven yard pass to Rishard Matthews, backed up by a nine yarder to Matthews.

Alex Welch of The Falcoholic believes Ryan’s tendency to be inconsistent cost the Falcons the win on Sunday:

The Falcons looked like the better team for most of the game, again. They hit the same lull we see every week in the third quarter, and the Dolphins managed to come right back.

Matt Ryan was exceptional and sporadic all in one. He can carry the team at times, and he had the ground game working in his favor as well. The Falcons averaged 4.9 yards rushing on 30 carries. The offensive play-calling could still use some work, though. Should they have gone for it on fourth-and-goal early on in the game? I’d like to see more aggression. They leave points on the table, a lot.

The Falcons will host the Patriots on Sunday Night Football in Week 4, while the Dolphins will travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints on Monday Night Football.
