Despite a seemingly large increase in injuries to star players this year, the NFL is still pushing for an 18-game regular season, according to Pro Football Talk.
NFL reportedly still seeks 18-game regular season
The NFL has re-opened its efforts to expand the regular season to 18 games.

The NFLPA has repeatedly turned down the 18-game proposal by the NFL over the last few years. The league most recently had offered the game increase during the last collective bargaining agreement negotiation, but the NFLPA declined. The league put the talk on hold over the last two seasons but the rehash of the proposal shows a determined desire from the NFL to expand its season format. If the league were to increase the games in the regular season to 18, the players would share in the revenue increase.
In the past, the NFL had discussed eliminating two preseason games from the schedule that would be replaced by the two new regular season games. While this would eliminate added risk for star players, it would cause an issue for coaches that are trying to determine a roster during the preseason.
