Dolphins extend contract of GM Jeff Ireland, per report

Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland earned his contract extension well before Miami’s 3-0 start to the 2013 season.

Jeff Ireland has been given an extension as the general manager of the Miami Dolphins, the Miami Herald reports. The extension isn't a surprise given the Dolphins' 3-0 start this season. More surprising is that Ireland was given his extension in the offseason, when there were questions about the Dolphins' prospects and the major free agency moves that the team made in the offseason.

The Herald was informed of the extension by a league source, who didn’t reveal and further details except that the new contract runs through the 2014 season, at least. Ireland’s former contract was set to expire after this season.

Ireland has been the GM of the Dolphins since 2008. He oversaw the team’s first playoff appearance in seven years, but had come under fire since after four straight losing seasons.

This season appears to be looking up for the Dolphins, however. Ryan Tannehill was a somewhat maligned pick when he was selected No. 8 overall in 2012, but he has played well to start the 2013 season. Offseason acquisitions like wide receiver Mike Wallace, linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, cornerback Brent Grimes and rookie pass rusher Dion Jordan also have proven fruitful.

The Dolphins are 3-0 for the first time since 2002, with wins over the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Atlanta Falcons. According to Kevin Nogle at Dolphins blog The Phinsider, fans are ecstatic:

What is the ceiling for this team? Could they keep up the winning streak next week on Monday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome? Whatever ends up happening next week, or over the next two weeks, the Dolphins are off to a much better start than anyone really expected.

And that start has everyone excited.
