Pierre Garcon: RGIII is ‘not fully healthy’

Robert Griffin III has struggled to start the 2013 season and Pierre Garcon says that the obvious reason is that he’s not fully healthy yet.

The Washington Redskins are 0-3 and Robert Griffin III, the 2012 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, has struggled every step of the way. In Week 3, Griffin finished 32-of-50 for 326 yards, but tossed an interception and was unable to record a touchdown pass.

While Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has reiterated to the media that the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback wouldn't be playing if he wasn't healthy, Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon told the Washington Post that Griffin's recovery from knee surgery is to blame for the slow start:

“He’s not fully healthy, obviously,” Garcon said at Redskins Park. “He’s running a little bit more. But last year’s RGIII was a lot different from this year’s RG because of his knee. It’s not surprising. We’ve been talking about it the whole offseason. It’s the same question every day on Monday. We can find something else to talk about.”

Added prior to the 2012 season in free agency, Garcon caught 44 passes for 633 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games in 2012. Through three games in 2013, he has already accumulated 23 catches for 280 yards and Griffin leads the NFL in pass completions.

Still, Griffin has thrown four interceptions through three games after throwing just five in the 15 games he started as a rookie. He has become much less dangerous as a runner too, with only 15 rushing attempt for 62 yards in the first three games. As a rookie, Griffin averaged eight rushing attempts per game with an average of 6.8 yards per carry.
