Alex Carrington injury: Bills DE has torn quad tendon

Carrington is likely done for the year and his career with the Bills might be over as well.

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sport

The Buffalo Bills will likely be without defensive end Alex Carrington for the remainder of the 2013 season after he suffered a quadriceps tear in the team's 27-20 loss to the New York Jets in Week 3, the team announced on Monday.

Carrington, 26, was a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and played mostly in a reserve role before snagging a starting job over the summer. However, Brian Galliford of SB Nation's Bills blog, Buffalo Rumblings, says the injury could mean the end of Carrington's time with the Bills, despite his recent emergence as a starter.

Now he’s likely out for the rest of the year, meaning that it’s possible that we’ve seen the last of Carrington in a Bills uniform - he is scheduled for unrestricted free agency next March. Alan Branch and Corbin Bryant will see an increase in playing time on the Bills’ defensive line; Branch has seen more reps this season and is the more established player, while Bryant is closer to what Carrington offers from a physical standpoint.

In four seasons with the Bills, Carrington has accumulated four career sacks, 53 tackles and six passes defended, although he did not record a sack in the first three games of 2013.
