Anthony Spencer injury: Cowboys DE may need microfracture surgery, could be out for season

Anthony Spencer may need season-ending surgery after apparently suffering yet another setback on his injured knee during the Cowboys’ Week 2 loss to the Chiefs.

Anthony Spencer may need microfracture surgery on his knee and could miss the rest of the 2013 season as result, Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Monday morning. Spencer returned off knee surgery to play against the Kansas City Chiefs on in Week 2, but it appears he has suffered yet another setback.

Spencer was initially projected to miss just 2-4 weeks after undergoing surgery in July, which would have kept out for most of training camp but put him in position to start the Cowboys' regular season opener. He experienced chronic swelling in his surgically-repaired knee, however, causing the Cowboys to shift back his return date. He finally returned against the Chiefs, but he was ruled inactive at game time of Sunday's bout against the St. Louis Rams after missing practice Wednesday and Friday.

Spencer played limited snaps against the Chiefs, but there was worry that he overexerted himself more than a week after the game, according to Calvin Watson of ESPN Dallas. It appears that the Cowboys may need to roll ahead with their newly franchise-tagged defensive end for the time being. Spencer has just two tackles on the season. George Selvie and Kyle Wilber will be expected to step up for Spencer if he sits the rest of the year.
