Anthony Spencer injury: Cowboys DE to have season-ending surgery

The Cowboys will miss one of the top pass rushers for the rest of the season.

Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will undergo season-ending microfracture surgery, according to agent Jordan Woy. The Pro Bowl defensive end underwent knee surgery on his left leg in July and has been held to just five practices and one game since the initial procedure, according to Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas/Forth Worth.

Spencer's sole performance this season came against the Chiefs in Week 2. He will likely be placed on injured reserve by the Cowboys, who will pay him $10.6 million after putting the franchise tag on him this offseason. Due to the designation, Spencer's salary is fully guaranteed and he will be a free agent in the summer. Per Woy, Spencer is expected to be fully healthy by February of 2014.

The five-year veteran made the Pro Bowl last season as an outside linebacker in the Cowboys’ then-3-4 defense. This season, he was making the adjustment to defensive end in new defensive coordinator Monty Kiffin’s Tampa 2. He was only able to produce two tackles in his one appearance in the new defense.
