Torrey Smith calls Ray Lewis’ claim that Ravens lack leadership ‘a joke’

Ravens’ wide receiver Torrey Smith is taking exception to former Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis’ comments about the team’s leadership.

Former Ravens' linebacker Ray Lewis recently made a startling assessment of Baltimore's locker room after the story of wide receiver Jacoby Jones' incident with a stripper leaked to the media on Monday.

Lewis played 17 years in Baltimore and said that he believes that the team lacks leadership. However, on Wednesday, Ravens' wide receiver Torrey Smith told the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson that his former teammate's remarks were a "joke" and that Baltimore has plenty of leadership in the locker room.

Smith believes that the Jones incident was a random incident that does not reflect on the team’s leadership. “Stuff happens in the locker room, stuff happens in the spur of the moment,” Smith said. “Now, if it happens every week, all the time, then that’s a problem. For one incident to happen and say it’s a leadership issue when most of the team wasn’t there, it’s an overreaction.”

His teammate, Vonta Leach, reportedly started laughing after being asked about the Lewis-assessed lack of leadership in the locker room.

“Leadership on our team is good,” Leach said. “I don’t think necessarily there’s a question about our leadership. It’s bad publicity, but no one got hurt or arrested. It could have been worse. Things happen. It’s all right.”

The Ravens will travel to Buffalo in Week 4 to face the Bills at 1 p.m. ET Sunday on CBS.
