Steelers’ Isaac Redman says he suffered concussion, reentered game in Week 2

The running back claims to have beaten concussion evaluations in order to return to the field in Pittsburgh’s loss to the Bengals.

Update: The Steelers issued a release disputing Redman’s claim that he played with a concussion, according to Pro Football Talk.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Isaac Redman said he reentered a Week 2 game despite having suffered a concussion earlier in the contest, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Redman took a blow to the head during the opening kickoff of the Steelers' Monday night loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He was taken to the locker room to undergo evaluation by team trainers and was cleared to return to action.

“I had a concussion,” Redman said, per the Post-Gazette. “I was pretty much out of it the rest of the game. I just tried to go back in.”

In the wake of mounting concern over long-term damage from football-related head trauma, the NFL has been very public with the implementation of its stringent gameday concussion protocol. In any cases where a head injury is suspected, players must undergo a thorough evaluation process before being cleared to return.

Redman’s strategy for beating this complex battery of tests wasn’t exactly complex. As he told the Post-Gazette: “I said I was all right.”

He returned to the field for the first offensive series of the second quarter. He finished the game with three carries and two receptions.
