Former Panther Sean Gilbert wants to replace DeMaurice Smith as NFLPA leader

NFLPA leader DeMaurice Smith has a former player gunning for his job.

USA TODAY Sports

Current NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith will have some competition for his job in 2015. Former Panthers defensive lineman Sean Gilbert is poised to run against Smith in the next election, according to the Wall Street Journal's Kevin Clark (via CBS Sports).

Gilbert played 12 years in the league for four different teams and is a former Pro Bowler. His issues with Smith’s performance stem from the negotiation of the last Collective Bargaining Agreement. Gilbert believes that Smith allowed for the NFLPA to leave millions of dollars on the table and gave NFL commissioner Roger Goodell too much power.

Smith has been the leader of the NFLPA since 2009, and the organization claims to have made more money for players in the first two years of the current CBA than ever before. Gilbert has published 23,000-word e-book in hopes of jump-starting his campaign for the executive director role in 2015. The e-book is entitled “The $29 Million Tip” in reference to Goodell’s salary in 2011, according to the Journal’s report.
