The San Francisco 49ers blasted the St. Louis Rams on the road, 35-11, in a game that arguably wasn't as close as the lopsided score indicated. To add to the insult, the Rams appeared to deal with more injury issues during the game.
49ers vs. Rams 2013 injury report: T.J. McDonald breaks leg, Joe Staley okay
To make matters worse for the Rams, they lost rookie safety T.J. McDonald to a broken leg during Thursday night’s loss to the 49ers. The team is now scrambling for depth in the secondary.
Of most pressing concern is rookie safety T.J. McDonald, who suffered a leg fracture after making relatively light contact with a teammate. A broken leg puts his immediate playing status with the team in jeopardy, obviously, and leaves the Rams' secondary scrambling for depth. The team also lost Cortland Finnegan to a thigh bruise in the first half.
A few plays before McDonald was hurt, rotational defensive end Eugene Sims was shaken up on a play. Sims collided with a teammate early in the third quarter, but it's unclear what he injured or whether he will miss extensive playing time. The Rams got another scare when left tackle Jake Long left the game with a leg injury, but he was able to return after sitting briefly.
The 49ers also had a frightening moment concerning their left tackle. Joe Staley left the game late after getting his leg bent backwards at the knee. He was heard screaming in pain, and had to hobble off the field with the help of two trainers. Staley was reportedly seen walking out of the X-ray room without a significant limp after the game, however, and head coach Jim Harbaugh said that the 49ers dodged a bullet. It's a good sign that Staley was joking around about his reaction to the injury after the game.
Rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton may not have been as lucky. He left the game near the end of the first quarter after injuring his foot on what seemed like a routine catch. The reception was the first of his career.
