Quinton Patton injury: 49ers WR fractures foot

The rookie wide receiver will not head to injured reserve and is expected to return later in the year.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without rookie wide receiver Quinton Patton for a while after the fourth-round pick suffered a fractured foot in the team's 35-11 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night. The 49ers don't plan on sending him to injured reserve, however, and Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports Patton will stay on the 53-man roster so he can return later in the season.

David Fucillo of SB Nation’s 49ers blog, Niners Nation, did some research on the significance of the metatarsal fracture for Patton:

We’ll get an update on the specifics, but I did some googling to see what this might mean. Two websites, including NIH.gov indicates as much as 6-8 weeks of recovery. His foot will be immobilized for a stretch and he has to avoid weight-bearing initially. That being said, it’s not any sort of “devastating” injury. Harbaugh did say the team could keep Patton on the 53-man roster, as opposed to placing him on injured reserve.

The 23-year-old Patton recorded his first career reception against the Rams in the first quarter of Thursday’s game, but suffered the foot injury as he was tackled. He was later taken to the locker room and ruled as questionable to return to the game.

In two seasons at Louisiana Tech, Patton was twice named a first-team All-WAC selection and accumulated 182 receptions, 2,594 yards receiving and 24 touchdown receptions.
