Matt Flynn relegated to back-up quarterback once again

Luck hasn’t been kind to the former LSU quarterback.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Oakland Raiders have chosen to go with Terrelle Pryor as their starting quarterback, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Once again, this leaves Matt Flynn on the bench in favor of a younger player with more athleticism. Flynn hasn't had it easy in the NFL, coming in from LSU as a seventh round draft pick in 2008 by the Green Bay Packers. Flynn sat behind Aaron Rodgers without any substantial playing time until the final game of the 2011 season against the Detroit Lions.

In that affair, Flynn turned plenty of heads with a performance including 480 yards and six touchdowns. At season's end, Flynn signed a three-year, $19.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks to become the starter. The script wouldn't go according to plan though, with a third round draft pick named Russell Wilson swooping in and stealing the spotlight.

Flynn was once again on the bench, watching with a clipboard as the Seahawks were within seconds of advancing to the NFC Championship Game. He was on the move again following last season, being traded to the desperate Oakland Raiders for a 2014 fifth round pick and a conditional pick the following year.

Amazingly, Flynn once again finds himself in a backup role after having a mediocre preseason. Pryor has more upside and can make plays outside the pocket, something that’s needed in Oakland this year considering the offensive line. It all adds up to Flynn being one of the most expensive backup quarterbacks in NFL history for another year.
