Carl Nicks injury: Buccaneers uncertain of lineman’s return

Nicks contracted MRSA, a type of staph infection and has been out of action.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman Carl Nicks has been out of action after an outbreak of MRSA in the team's locker room, and the team is unsure when they'll be getting him back, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph infection that is resistant to antibiotics and typically appears as a skin infection. Also affected by the outbreak was Buccaneers kicker Lawrence Tynes, who was placed on the team's non-football injury list over the weekend.

Nicks, 28, was acquired by the team in free agency in 2012 after a first-team All-Pro season with the New Orleans Saints in 2011. In his first year with the Buccaneers, he suffered a toe injury that required surgery and sent him to injured reserve in October.

On Monday, Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano told reporters that it's still "too early to tell" if Nicks will be ready for the team's Sunday game against the New York Jets. If he isn't able to play, it'll be a competition between Gabe Carimi, Jamon Meredith and Ted Larsen for the starting spot at left guard.
