Could Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell start vs. Titans?

A start in the season opener would be a surprising turn-around for Bell, who was originally ruled out 6-8 weeks.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The running back position for the Pittsburgh Steelers has been speculated about a great deal during the preseason, but rookie Le'Veon Bell could be the surprise starter for the team when they kickoff the regular season with a Week 1 game against the Tennessee Titans.

On Tuesday, the Steelers revealed the depth chart for their upcoming game and listed the starting running back as Bell or Isaac Redman, according to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Despite previous speculation that Felix Jones could snag the starting role, it looks as if he's out of the running, but the second-round pick out of Michigan State would be a surprise considering a foot injury he suffered near the end of preseason.

Originally ruled out for 6-8 weeks, Bell said on Monday he was optimistic for a return in Week 2 when the Steelers are scheduled to face the Cincinnati Bengals. Even Bell himself doubted that a return to the field in the season opener was a realistic goal.

With a new cast of characters at running back for the Steelers, the decision to play with the depth chart could simply be some gamesmanship from head coach Mike Tomlin to attempt to make the Titans prepare for more than they have to.
