Blaine Gabbert injury: Jaguars QB ‘uncomfortable’ throwing football

Jacksonville might have to worry about who its starting quarterback is in Week 1.

Michael Hickey

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert is back at practice, but he's still not fully participating, according to Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union.

Gabbert broke a bone in his thumb during a preseason game against the New York Jets, after locking up the starting job for all intents and purposes with a quality performance that same night. Now, Gabbert is trying to get back in time for Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Practicing Monday, Gabbert was throwing the ball on short routes but wasn’t taking any snaps from a shotgun formation or under center. The ex-Missouri Tigers star is putting on a brave face when talking about the injury, per the piece:

“It’s uncomfortable but at the same time, it’s just something you can’t worry about,” he said. “It’s about pain tolerance and having confidence in your throws and knowing that you can get the ball to spots that you need because not everything will be clean and crisp in the game. You have to make good throws and put throws into some tight windows so I’m just trying to progress to that level right now.”

The question is how much will head coach Gus Bradley trust his ability should the injury not improve steadily throughout the week? If Gabbert can't start, the job will fall to veteran backup Chad Henne to take the reins come Sept. 8.
