Cowboys acquire Caesar Rayford from Colts

Dallas and Indianapolis swung a deal on Tuesday with preseason star Caesar Rayford heading to the Cowboys.

Jim O’Connor-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys acquired defense end Caesar Rayford from the Indianapolis Colts on Monday for an undisclosed draft pick, according to Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com. Todd Archer of ESPN.com reported the draft pick is a conditional pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Rayford was one of the stars of the preseason, racking up five sacks in four games. The 27-year-old is entering his first season in the NFL after spending a season in the Canadian Football League and five seasons in the Arena Football League. The Colts signed him this offseason and he played well enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster.

In Dallas, Rayford will give the Cowboys some depth at defensive end and provide some insurance in case Anthony Spencer isn't able to play in the season opener against the Giants. Spencer is recovering from knee surgery and it's still unknown if he will play on Sunday.

Although Rayford likely won’t be able to step in and immediately fill Spencer’s shoes, he did have success against New York in the preseason. Rayford finished with two sacks and three tackles against the Giants, although both sacks came late in the game against backups.
