Rex Ryan will not bench Geno Smith as Jets QB

Jets QB Geno Smith has turned over the ball 11 times in his first four games, but Rex Ryan is standing behind the rookie for now.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has accumulated 11 turnovers in his first four NFL starts, including four that all led to touchdowns in the team's Week 4 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but Jets head coach Rex Ryan says he isn't going to bench the rookie any time soon.

“It’s not a thought at this point,” Ryan said on Monday of the possibility of Smith being benched.

Smith, a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, has led the Jets to a 2-2 record with two game-winning drives, but his propensity for turnovers has John Butchko of SB Nation's Jets blog, Gang Green Nation, concerned:

Turnovers happen with a rookie. It is just there are turnovers, and there are TURNOVERS. Sometimes a guy misses a block, a quarterback expects a receiver to run a different way than he does, a defender makes a spectacular play, or there is some other mitigating factor. That has not really been the case with Geno Smith this year. He has eleven in four games. He has had at least two in every game, and they all seem to be really bad ones.

With Mark Sanchez on injured reserve for the time being, the other quarterback options for the Jets are Matt Simms and Brady Quinn. An undrafted free agent in 2012, Simms has not taken a regular snap before and Quinn has compiled a 4-16 record as a starter in his career.
