Mark Sanchez injury: Jets QB will have surgery, out 4-6 months

The season appears to be over for Jets QB Mark Sanchez as he has opted to have surgery on his shoulder.

The 2013 season appears to be officially over for New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez as he will opt to have surgery to repair his torn labrum, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, beginning a 4-6 month rehabilitation process.

Due for cap hits of more than $13 million in each of the next three seasons, the surgery could also spell the end of his time with the Jets if the team elects to move on without him as the team's starter. Sanchez suffered the injury during the third preseason game of the year for the Jets on Aug. 24 and rookie Geno Smith was subsequently named the starter for the Jets.

After trips to the AFC Championship Game in the first two seasons of his career, he had his best year statistically in 2011 with 26 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, but threw just 13 touchdowns with 18 interceptions in 2012.
