NFL roundup: Jairus Byrd could miss time, Bears release Jonathan Scott

Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd could miss some regular season time with plantar fasciitis. Byrd dealt with the injury last season and had to receive shots to be able to play through it, but it doesn't sound like that is the solution for the injury at this point. It's a bad situation for the Bills, who weren't even sure they'd have Byrd as he took so long to sign his franchise tender. He was holding out for a long-term contract.

The Chicago Bears released offensive tackle Jonathan Scott on Tuesday. The team also re-signed tight end Kyle Adams. The release of Scott is a surprise, given that he's generally been a solid player, is a respected veteran and is on a team with significant issues along the offensive line. That leaves the Bears with only one backup offensive tackle.

The Houston Texans locked up linebacker Brian Cushing for the long-term, signing him to a six-year contract extension on Tuesday. Cushing was entering the final year of his rookie deal, but will now earn $55.643 million over the course of the extension, with $21 million guaranteed. Wide receiver Andre Johnson restructured his contract to facilitate the deal.

New Orleans Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma was placed on injured reserve with the return designation on Tuesday. Vilma will be forced to miss the first eight weeks of the regular season, at which point he can return to the team and have to count against the 53-man roster. Vilma is dealing with a knee injury that has been off and on for multiple seasons now.

Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins passed the required concussion tests to return to football activity on Tuesday. Hopkins suffered a concussion in the team's second preseason game, but will have plenty of time to practice and be available for the team's first game of the regular season. Hopkins was a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and should start opposite Andre Johnson.
