It's been a tight race for the Houston Texans' No. 2 quarterback spot, but T.J. Yates has managed to fend off youngster Case Keenum. The team announced Thursday that head coach Gary Kubiak has named Yates the official backup to Matt Schaub.
T.J. Yates named Texans’ backup QB
Yates has managed to hold onto his spot behind Matt Schaub despite a strong preseason from Case Keenum.

“We’ll go this season with T.J. starting as our two,” Kubiak told Drew Dougherty. “I couldn’t have made a wrong decision. They both played so well.”
Yates was the primary backup last season, but was pushed through training camp and preseason by Keenum, a homegrown talent in his second year out of the University of Houston. Keenum staged a valiant final push in the Texans' last preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys -- going 9-of-13 for 128 yards and a touchdown -- but the effort was apparently not enough. To his credit, Yates went 8-of-11 for 109 yards and a touchdown of his own in the same game.
Yates was taken by the Texans in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He has played in 10 games for Houston, throwing 987 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
