Ravens sign John Harbaugh to multi-year extension

Ravens have signed John Harbaugh to a contract extension that will make him one of the highest paid coaches in the NFL.

Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE

The Baltimore Ravens signed head coach John Harbaugh to a multi-year contract extension Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports just one hour before kickoff against the Denver Broncos. Harbaugh's current contract was set to run out after two more seasons.

According to Pro Football Talk, Harbaugh's new contract will replace the two years remaining on his current deal, and tack on another two years at a salary of more than $7 million per season. The extension thus locks him in as the head coach of the Ravens through the 2016 season.

Coming off a Super Bowl victory, it's not surprising that the Ravens are committing to Harbaugh for a longer term. He has a 54-26 record as head coach of the Ravens for the last five seasons. In the playoffs, he has compiled a 9-4 record. The Ravens have appeared in the AFC Championship Game three times during his tenure, winning once on their way to a world championship last season.

Though the timing of the announcement is intriguing, the extension had been finalized for several months, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.
