Johnathan Joseph: Ed Reed out for Week 1

Ed Reed hasn’t officially been ruled out of the season opener, but at least one Houston player doesn’t expect Reed to play.

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Whether or not you should expect Ed Reed to play on Monday night for Houston may depend on who you ask. Reed's coach said he thinks there is a "shot" Reed could play, while one of his teammates said Reed is out for the season opener.

Reed missed all of training camp while recovering from hip surgery. He's practiced on a limited basis this week and did more work on Friday than he did on Thursday, according to Tania Ganguli of the ESPN. Ganguli reported Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said he thinks there is a chance Reed could play on Monday against San Diego.

If Reed does play, it may surprise Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph who, when discussing Reed, said "obviously, he's out" for the season opener, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Joseph said Reed's participation in practice is a step in the right direction.

The question is whether Joseph jumped the gun in declaring Reed out, or if Kubiak is just avoiding tipping his cards, giving the Chargers something else to prepare for. In all likelihood, Reed isn't going to be much of a factor, even if he does play. With only a couple of limited practices under his belt following a long rehab from a serious injury, Reed would probably be held to an extremely limited role, if he plays at all.
