Manti Te’o injury: Chargers rookie out vs. Texans

The wait to see Manti Te’o in the NFL gets longer as the rookie will miss Week 1.

San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te'o will not play in the team's Week 1 game against the Houston Texans, Adam Schefter reports. Te'o injured his foot in San Diego's preseason opener on Aug. 8 and has not seen action since.

Te’o entered the league with no small amount of hype, due in equal parts to his play and to what was discovered to be his fake girlfriend. He saw only nine snaps prior to being injured in the first preseason game, so the issue of whether or not any of the hype has been justified is far from settled. Te’o had been expected to start for the Chargers, but such an extended delay may spoil those expectations.

Bront Bird will likely start for the Chargers. Bird signed with San Diego as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and has played in 14 games, nine in his rookie year and five in 2012. He has 26 career tackles, no sacks and one interception.
