NFL news roundup: Koa Misi signs extension, Arthur Jones had viral infection

Koa Misi signed a contract extension, Arthur Jones had a viral infection and more you may have missed from Saturday.

Rick Stewart

The Miami Dolphins signed linebacker Koa Misi to a four-year contract extension on Saturday. Misi was drafted by the Dolphins in 2010 and has played well since then. He started 11 games in his rookie season, and started 14 games last season. He managed 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and 65 tackles last season. He's been one of the most consistent run-defenders out there and the contract should serve both parties well.

Here’s what else you might have missed on Saturday:

Arthur Jones had viral infection

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Arthur Jones recently dealt with a viral infection near his heart. Reports on Saturday said that the infection has cleared up, however. It's obviously a big deal, and great news that it's cleared up. There's no word on when Jones will return to action, though he needs to get back into football shape at this point. He's a big part of the Ravens' defense, which struggled big-time in the opener against the Denver Broncos.

Bruno Mars to perform Super Bowl halftime show

It's not yet confirmed by the NFL, but it was reported on Saturday that Bruno Mars will be performing at this season's Super Bowl for the halftime show. It's an interesting change, given the NFL's propensity for getting washed-up stars to perform, though they have been trying to move away from that, having Beyonce last year.

Brady Quinn released by Jets

The New York Jets released quarterback Brady Quinn on Saturday. The move came just five days after the team signed him. It appears his salary would have become guaranteed had he remained on the roster on Saturday. The team is expected to bring him back on Monday, however. Geno Smith and Matt Simms will be the active quarterbacks for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jared Veldheer hits IR

The Oakland Raiders placed left tackle Jared Veldheer on injured reserve with a designation to return on Saturday. Under the return designation, Veldheer has to sit out the first eight weeks of the season, but can play in Week 9 and count against the 53-man roster. The Raiders have some huge issues on the offensive line already, and this just makes things worse. Menelik Watson was expected to take his place at LT, but he's got a knee injury, so Khalif Barnes will have to play on the left. That leaves Tony Pashos to play on the right.
