Packers vs. 49ers 2013 game recap: San Francisco defeats Green Bay, 34-28

The San Francisco 49ers held off the Green Bay Packers in a thrilling and sometimes heated game, winning 34-28 at home on Sunday afternoon.

The Packers and 49ers endured a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, with San Francisco striking first after a 83-yard drive ended in a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Vernon Davis. The Packers would respond on their next possession with a lengthy drive of their own, capped by Aaron Rodger's 5-yard toss to receiver Randall Cobb -- the first of three touchdown passes on the day for the veteran quarterback.

A couple of miscues in the second quarter threatened to derail the game for the Packers, as San Francisco took advantage of a short field after a Eddie Lacy fumble to take a 14-7 lead. The end of the drive ended in controversial fashion, however, with the officials incorrectly giving the 49ers another shot on third down after two offsetting penalties for each team.

The 49ers were unable to take advantage of an Aaron Rodgers interception, however, with the Packers tying the game with an 8-play, 62-yard drive to end the half after a missed field goal by Phil Dawson.

The back-and-forth game continued into the fourth quarter, when the Packers took a 28-24 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. The 49ers would once again respond with an impressive drive, covering 80 yards in just five plays that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by veteran Frank Gore.

Down 31-28, the Packers would turn the ball over on downs without gaining a first down after starting the drive at their own 9-yard line. Anquan Boldin's 13th catch of the game would convert a key fourth down on the next drive, and San Francisco put the game away with a field goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation.

Colin Kaepernick was 27-of-39 for 412 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while showing full command over what looks to be a lethal passing attack for the 49ers. Anquan Boldin was stellar in his San Francisco debut, hauling in 13 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Packers receiver Jordy Nelson was the go-to receiver for Aaron Rodgers, finishing with seven catches for 130 yards and a touchdown. Rodgers threw for three touchdowns and 333 yards in the game but had one interception on 21-of-37 passing for a Packers team incapable of getting the running game going for most of the game.

Packers offensive lineman Johnny Jolly was briefly down yet would return for the next play after a timeout, while Anquan Boldin briefly left the game for the 49ers in the second half with an apparent leg injury but would return on the next drive.
