Florida State RB Devonta Freeman to declare for NFL Draft, per report

Freeman’s official announcement is expected Monday.

Devonta Freeman is going out on a high note. Less than a week after his Florida State Seminoles won the national championship, Michael Silver of NFL Media is reporting the junior running back will declare for the 2014 NFL Draft on Monday.

Freeman ran for 73 yards and a touchdown against Auburn in the Vizio BCS National Championship game, becoming the Seminoles’ first 1,000-yard rusher since 1996 in the process. He finished the season with 1,016 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground and was a first-team All-ACC selection.

The NFL Draft Advisory Board graded Freeman as a third-round selection, according to NFL.com. He has good quickness to the corner but lacks elite straight-line speed. His ability to handle a heavy workload is also a concern -- Freeman had at least 15 carries just eight times during his career -- though his light use in college also means he’ll have fresh legs when he hits the pros.

Freeman is the fourth Florida State underclassman to declare for the draft, joining defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan, wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin and fellow halfback James Wilder Jr.
