49ers vs. Panthers inactives: Steve Smith active, Jonathan Stewart out for Carolina

The 49ers, though, will not have Carlos Rogers.

Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart and San Francisco cornerback Carlos Rogers will both be out for Sunday's playoff matchup, the teams announced on Twitter. Steve Smith, though, is active for the Panthers.

Stewart missed the first seven games of the regular season after recovering from ankle surgeries, and after playing in six games, tore his MCL and has not yet returned. In those six games, Stewart received 48 carries for 180 yards, ranking second among the team’s running backs with 3.8 yards per carry. He was listed a questionable on the final injury report.

DeAngelo Williams (201 carries, 843 yards) will receive the bulk of the rushing load for Carolina, but Mike Tolbert (101 carries, 361 yards and five touchdowns) should see some play as well, especially in the goal-line situations where Stewart has thrived over the years.

Carolina will have an important piece available, as Steve Smith will return after missing the regular season finale. The veteran has caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns this season.

Rogers, who missed two games early in the season, will not be available in the San Francisco secondary. In his third year with the team, he recorded two interceptions and 39 tackles.
