AFC Championship 2014: Bill Belichick tries to make history

New England’s coach is looking to join an impressive man at the top of the postseason wins list.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is on the doorstep of history.

With a win in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday at Sports Authority Field, Belichick will tie Dallas Cowboys great Tom Landry for the most postseason wins of all-time with 20. Landry won all of his games with Dallas, most coming in an era when only four teams made the postseason.

All but one of Belichick's playoff wins have come with the Patriots, with the first coming in 1994 as coach of the Cleveland Browns. Ironically, Belichick beat his mentor, Bill Parcells, who was coaching New England at the time. Currently, Belichick's 19 wins are tied for second all-time with Don Shula.

With a victory, Belichick would be going to his sixth Super Bowl as a head coach, tying Shula for the record who went with the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Colts. Tom Landry coached five Super Bowls, and the only other coaches who even made it to four Super Bowls were Chuck Noll, Dan Reeves and Marv Levy, who incidentally lost four consecutive Super Bowls.
