Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years' probation on Friday for the drunk driving accident that killed his friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Brent avoided a possible 20-year sentence for a drunk driving accident that killed former Cowboys teammate Jerry Brown.
Brent was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. He was convicted on Wednesday of intoxicated manslaughter for the 2012 incident in Dallas and could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in jail.
Brent, who retired from the league last year, was driving home late one night in December of 2012 when he lost control of his Mercedes. Brown, who had played with Brent at the University of Illinois and was on the Cowboys practice squad at the time, was riding in the passenger’s seat and died in the crash.
Police tests measured Brent’s blood alcohol content at 0.18 percent, well above the Texas legal driving limit of .08. Brent’s attorneys argued that the tests were flawed and that he had not been drunk. According to the defense, he was only “guilty of being stupid behind the wheel of a car.”
Brent previously served 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drunk driving in 2009.
