Ticket prices for Super Bowl 48 are plunging across the board after expectations that it would be the most expensive one ever. According to NFL Ticket Exchange, the cheapest ticket costs $1,400, much closer to face value than anticipated. Ticket prices normally run in the range of $2,500 to $3,000 for the big game.

The reasons for falling prices are disputed. The cold weather in New Jersey is being blamed for the low demand -- the game is outdoors in MetLife Stadium and snow remains a possibility -- but one broker told USA Today that the “teams are not sexy” and location doesn’t really matter in this instance.

“The issue with the weather is one thing, but the teams are not drawing,” said Patania.

“If this game was in San Diego or Miami, it would still not be a good ticket because the teams are not sexy. ... You don’t have these huge fan bases that you would have if Washington or Dallas or New York or someone else was in it.”

Another potential reason is the distance from the two teams participating. Fans of the Seahawks and Broncos will both have to fly more than 4,000 miles from Seattle or Denver.

The NFL has stated that it’s not concerned about the falling prices, having already sold out all tickets at face value. The league held a lottery for 1,000 tickets worth $500 each, down from the $650 for last year’s game in New Orleans.
