NFL Draft 2014: Texans would be willing to trade No. 1 pick, owner says

Team owner Bob McNair expressed interest in trading down in the upcoming draft.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said his team is open to dealing the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL draft, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The team would do so in hopes of landing a quarterback with an impact defensive player, McNair said.

With Matt Schaub regressing seemingly beyond repair and youngster Case Keenum flaming out, most experts have speculated the Texans would spend the top pick on a new franchise quarterback, with Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater being the heavy favorite.

Instead, it seems their plan would be to trade the rights to Bridgewater in exchange for a pair of picks lower down, using the first on a passer of slightly lesser value and the other to snag a big-name defender. If they could manage to keep themselves in the top 10 after the trade, they could still have shot at Fresno State’s Derek Carr, Central Florida’s Blake Bortles or Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel.

Houston earned the top pick after a promising season that began with Super Bowl aspirations imploded. The Texans finished with a shocking 2-14 record. They introduced Bill O'Brien as their new head coach earlier this week, and he'll inherit what is already considered a talented roster even before the addition of high draft picks.
