Super Bowl 2014 odds and line: Spread still increasing in favor of Broncos

Late action has increased the point spread even more in favor of the Broncos. How close is Sunday’s Super Bowl projected to be, historically?

We are just two days away from the Super Bowl, and support is still coming in for the Denver Broncos over the Seattle Seahawks. One day after the line ticked up to two points in favor of the Broncos, it apparently moved up another half-point Friday. The Broncos are now 2.5-point favorites on most sports books, according to OddsShark, and are as high as a 3-point favorite at Bovada.

Jeff Gray pointed out Thursday that the spread would have been the closest since 1982 had it held at two points. Late action has made the point moot, though Vegas still figures the game will be plenty close. Just 10 of 47 Super Bowls have ever had a line of three points or fewer.

It's unclear what has sparked gamblers to throw their money behind Denver in recent days. Besides a few choice quotes from Media Day, there have been no surprises in the lead-up to the weekend. Both teams appear to be relatively healthy. No Seahawks player was limited in practice Thursday, and defensive tackle Sione Fua was the only man to sit out for the Broncos.

The projected point total has held steady since opening at 48.5 points after the AFC and NFC Championship games were completed. The Seahawks and Broncos are projected to score a combined 48.5 points, which could make the Broncos 25-23 or 26-23 winners in the Super Bowl, depending on which side of the point spread and over/under they fall.
