Donnie Avery injury: Chiefs WR leaves with apparent concussion

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Donnie Avery left the Saturday wild card game against the Indianapolis Colts with an apparent concussion.
Avery is the second player being evaluated for a concussion after Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles was ruled out earlier in the game. There is no further update on the veteran receiver's status at this time, but losing him would be a serious blow for a team leaning on passing without its star running back.
Quarterback Alex Smith found Avery in the first half on a 79-yard touchdown pass to blow open a 10-point lead which extended to 21 by halftime. The score was his only reception of the game, but Avery was a valuable deep threat decoy to complement Dwayne Bowe.
Indianapolis has narrowed the Kansas City lead to 14 points early in the third quarter. The Chiefs may need another receiver to step up in order to stay in front, especially if Avery is unable to return.
