Lions coaching search: Mike Munchak will interview in Detroit, according to report

Munchak could find his way into another NFL head coaching position just days after he was fired by the Titans.

US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Lions are expected to interview former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak about their head coaching vacancy on Friday, according to a report from ESPN's Ed Werder, although he isn't considered to be the favorite for the job.

Munchak, 53, has spent his entire professional football career with the Titans organization, joining the team as an assistant coach in 1994 after 12 seasons on the Houston Oilers offensive line. He was named the team’s head coach in 2011, but compiled a 22-26 record in three seasons and never made the playoffs.

After five seasons with former Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz at the helm of the Lions, it appears the franchise is targeting an offensive-minded head coach to take over. While Munchak will reportedly meet with the team on Friday, Werder says former Arizona Cardinals head coach and current San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is the favorite for the job.

Munchak is also considered to be a finalist to become the new head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions after Bill O'Brien left the position to become the head coach of the Houston Texans.

The Lions finished the 2013 season with losses in six of the last seven weeks of the season and failed to make the postseason.
